Domain Name Pro RSS: preserve the address behind a subscription
A feed address can outlive a theme, a hosting account, and a publication's visual identity. Treat the domain behind it as part of the publishing contract. Record who controls the address, how canonical URLs are formed, and what a future move must preserve.
Choose an address your team can maintain
Use a public address with clear operational ownership. Record responsibility for domain renewal, account recovery, DNS changes, and hosting configuration. Keep those responsibilities separate from day-to-day article editing. A publication can have excellent content while its subscription becomes fragile because nobody knows which account controls the feed's hostname.
Prefer a short, durable feed path that does not encode the current theme or implementation language. The path can remain unchanged while the files or publishing system behind it evolve. Document its purpose alongside the website's preferred hostname and trailing-slash convention. Use one canonical URL function when generating page metadata, sitemap entries, and article links.
Keep identity independent from location
A new article address does not necessarily represent a new article. Preserve the original content identifier when changing a slug, section, or domain. Keep a mapping between the old address, the new canonical address, and the stable item identity. This record supports both feed continuity and a reviewable website migration.
- Inventory the public feed, article pages, essential images, and any media addresses before a move.
- Confirm which provider or account can maintain redirects from the previous public addresses.
- Generate the destination pages with consistent canonical links and updated internal references.
- Test existing subscriptions and saved article links after the routing change is in place.
Review a realistic migration example
Imagine a publication moving from an old brand domain to a new one while retaining its archive. The migration record should cover every article, including items no longer present in the recent feed window. The new feed should preserve identifiers, while item links point to the intended canonical pages. Relevant redirects belong in the hosting migration plan, using mechanisms the chosen host actually supports.
Inspect the old feed address, the destination feed, and a sample of older articles independently. A correct homepage does not prove that subscriptions and deep links still work. Review your source configuration for a forgotten hostname and update all generated discovery outputs together.
Make continuity routine
Keep a dated inventory of address ownership and recovery responsibilities with the project's operational notes. Review it when maintainers change or a hosting contract ends. A memorable domain supports a publication's identity, while clear control and careful routing preserve the relationships that readers have already established.
