OpenAI Pro RSS: define a structured feed-processing task

An OpenAI-oriented feed workflow should begin with a well-defined input and an output your application can inspect. Select the article material outside the model call, preserve its source identifiers, and decide how a valid draft will move into the editorial review process.

Design the output record first

Choose a small set of fields that serve the task. A classification result might contain an entry identifier, a topic label, a short rationale, and a review status. A summary result may also need supporting source identifiers and unresolved details. Avoid collecting fields that no downstream process or editor will use.

OpenAI's Structured Outputs documentation describes responses constrained by a supplied JSON schema. Confirm the supported schema features and model behavior in the current documentation for your implementation. A constrained shape can help software consume the result, while factual accuracy still needs its own checks.

Keep source identity outside generated claims

Build the request from selected records with immutable identifiers and approved source text. Store the relationship between those identifiers and canonical URLs in your own data. When a response names a source, verify that the identifier belongs to the supplied collection. A correctly shaped response can still refer to the wrong item.

Draft record:
entry_id
summary
supporting_source_ids
unresolved_details
review_state

Have the application assign workflow state after validation. The model may propose text, but the publishing process should determine whether that text has passed review. Keep public publication dates and stable feed GUIDs under the same application control.

Handle outcomes explicitly

  • Accept a completed result only after checking its expected structure.
  • Handle refusals and incomplete responses as distinct outcomes.
  • Reject unknown source identifiers and missing required evidence.
  • Record the prompt and model configuration used for the attempt.
  • Send approved text through the ordinary feed generator.

Test a short article, a long article, an empty excerpt, and conflicting source statements before increasing the workload. Record which failures come from selection, extraction, generation, or validation. This separates prompt improvements from problems that need a change elsewhere in the pipeline.

Keep provider credentials and execution details in the application environment, separate from static public pages. Readers need the resulting explanation and source context. Maintainers need the configuration and review history. The API workflow guide helps define the boundary between those responsibilities without tying the public feed to a particular model implementation.

RSS vs Atom

Choose RSS or Atom by comparing identity, content handling, publishing habits, and the readers that actually consume your feed.
